COMMUNITY POLICING ACT
Effective July 1, 2020 the Virginia General Assembly passed the Virginia Community Policing Act which requires law enforcement entities to collect demographic information related to traffic stops. This data is then forwarded to the Virginia State Police on a quarterly basis for analysis. The Virginia General Assembly amended the Virginia Community Policing Act and, effective July 1, 2021, law enforcement entities are required to make traffic and investigatory stop data available to the public.
Each time a Glade Spring Police Officer stops a driver of a motor vehicle, stops and frisks a person, based on reasonable suspicion, or temporarily detains a person during any other investigatory stop, the officer shall collect the following data based on the officer's observation or information provided to the officer by the driver:
- the race, ethnicity, age, and gender of the person stopped;
- whether the person stopped spoke English;
- the reason for the stop;
- location of the stop;
- whether a warning, written citation, or summons was issued or whether any person was arrested;
- the warning provided, violation or crime charged;
- whether the vehicle or any person was searched;
- whether the law-enforcement officer used physical force against any person;
- whether any person used physical force against any officers.
As part of this requirement, the Glade Spring Police Department is providing public access to the Department’s data through the portal created by the Virginia State Police. The Glade Spring Police Department data can be found on the Virginia Community Policing Act Portal.
